Common Artist’s Statement Mistakes to Avoid

• Don’t use grandiose statements, clichés, empty expressions, long explanations, or rants.

• Don’t list every material you have used.

• Don’t think of this as your résumé. Do not include the entire history of your work.

• Do not write a poem, and do not write only three sentences.

• Do not describe your childhood or personal life unless it is directly relevant to the work.

• Don’t use a bragging tone.

• The statement should be written in first person. Don’t refer to yourself as “the artist.”

• Be sure to proofread for grammar and spelling.

• Avoid using weak phrases like “I am trying to” or “I am attempting” or “I hope,” which suggest that you are unsure of your statement and suggest insecurity.
